Bridging human and machine learning for the needs of collective intelligence development

2020

There are no doubts that artificial and human intelligence enhance and complement each other. They are stronger together as a team of Collective (Collaborative) Intelligence. Both require training for personal development and high performance. However, the approaches to training (human vs. machine learning) are traditionally very different. If one needs efficient hybrid collective intelligence team, e.g. for managing processes within the Industry 4.0, then all the team members have to learn together. In this paper we point out the need for bridging the gap between the human and machine learning, so that some approaches used in machine learning will be useful for humans and vice-versa, some …

Crowdsourcing Fundamentals: Definition and Typology

2015

Crowdsourcing is a problem-solving and task realization model that is being increasingly used. Thanks to the possibility of harnessing the collective intelligence from the Internet; thanks to the crowdsourcing initiatives people can, for example, find a solution to a complex chemical problem, get images tagged, or get a logo designed. Due to its success and usefulness, more and more researchers have focused their interest on this concept. This fact has shown that the concept of crowdsourcing has no clear boundaries, and although over time the concept has been better explained, some authors describe it differently, propose different types of crowdsourcing initiatives, or even use contradicto…

The Need of Co-utility for Successful Crowdsourcing

2017

Technological development has promoted the rise and use of the collective intelligence through Internet. To efficiently handle this collective intelligence, several processes have naturally emerged. Crowdsourcing is one of them. By using crowdsourcing, the undertaking of a task can be proposed by a person or organization to the crowd that composes Internet. Although these proposed tasks could vary in their requirements for successful accomplishment, any crowdsourcing initiative always includes different benefits for the promoters of the initiatives and one or more rewards for each person of the crowd. These rewards play a key role because their evaluation by the crowd will condition the num…

On Interacting with Collective Knowledge of Group Facilitation

2013

Group decision process design is a well-known class of ill-structured, dynamic, and going-concerns problem. The paper presents a human-computer interaction engineering approach to design a software prototype that provides personalized, contextual and actionable recommendations for this problem. The approach emphasizes the computational aspects of collective intelligence to structure these recommendations based on the collective knowledge that reflects not only the design space per se, but the collective experience in exploiting it as well. It is demonstrated by: 1) detailing the engineering issues of an implemented prototype for the group decision process design; and 2) explaining its funct…

Agile Deep Learning UAVs Operating in Smart Spaces: Collective Intelligence Versus “Mission-Impossible”

2017

The environments, in which we all live, are known to be complex and unpredictable. The complete discovery of these environments aiming to take full control over them is a “mission-impossible”, however, still in our common agenda. People intend to make their living spaces smarter utilizing innovations from the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as very dynamic, autonomous and intelligent things capable to discover and control large areas are becoming important “inhabitants” within existing and future smart cities. Our concern in this paper is to challenge the potential of UAVs in situations, which are evolving fast in a way unseen before, e.g., em…

Agents Displacement in Arbitrary Geometrical Spaces: An Evolutionary Computation based Approach

2015

In many different social contexts, communication allows a collective intelligence to emerge. However, a correct way of exchanging information usually requires determined topological configurations of the agents involved in the process. Such a configuration should take into account several parameters, e.g. agents positioning, their proximity and time efficiency of communication. Our aim is to present an algorithm, based on evolutionary programming, which optimizes agents placement on arbitrarily shaped areas. In order to show its ability to deal with arbitrary bi-dimensional topologies, this algorithm has been tested on a set of differently shaped areas that present concavities, convexities …

Online Academic Networks as Knowledge Brokers: The Mediating Role of Organizational Support

2018

Placing online academic networks in the framework of social, cultural and institutional “deterritorialization,” the current paper aims at investigating the functionality of these new forms of transnational and trans-organizational aggregations as knowledge brokers. The emphasis is laid on the influence of human collective intelligence and consistent knowledge flows on research innovation, considering the role of organizational support within higher education systems. In this respect, the research relied on a questionnaire-based survey with 140 academics from European emerging countries, the data collected being processed via a partial least squares structural equation modelling technique. E…

Networking and knowledge creation: Social capital and collaborative innovation in responding to the COVID-19 crisis

2022

This study empirically explores the role of social capital in creating collaborative innovation and collective intelligence and maintaining organizational sustainability in the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis. Data were collected from a sample of 289 managers, directors and heads of departments of top 50 manufacturing firms in Jordan and analyzed using Smart-PLS-SEM. The results indicate that social capital significantly impacts collaborative innovation, collective intelligence and organization sustainability during the COVID-19 crisis. They also reveal that collective intelligence significantly impacts collaborative innovation and organization sustainability. This study enriches the literatu…
